Global recorded music trade revenue. Dividing by 12 gives about $2.64bn per month as an annual average, not measured monthly spending.
IFPI source ↗WHAT GETS
THE SPOTLIGHT?
Entertainment has measurable markets. Care and knowledge have measurable needs. The uncomfortable question is how we value each.
See the receipts ↓The real scandal is what we fail to count.
We can track music sales and football transfers with striking precision. We should bring the same sustained attention to health staffing, basic services and the people doing research. This page examines sectors and systems, without accusing individuals.
These measures have different units and meanings. Place them side by side as evidence of attention and unmet needs, never as a single spending total.
The receipts.
International men’s football transfer fees. This excludes domestic transfers, wages and other football revenue.
FIFA source ↗World R&D expenditure as a share of GDP, including public and private sources. It is a percentage, not a dollar figure directly comparable with trade revenue.
UNESCO UIS source ↗Estimated global nursing workforce shortage, despite 29.8 million nurses in the workforce. This is a staffing estimate, not a budget total.
WHO source ↗The money is real.
The categories are specific.
Recorded music revenue
Global trade revenue, 2023 and 2025
US$ billions
2023 figure reported in IFPI’s earlier release; this is recorded music, not all entertainment.
International football transfer fees
Men’s international transfers, 2024 and 2025
US$ billions
Fees are international transfers, not salary or total spending.
Can we rank fame against care?
There is no defensible “top five” league table.
Celebrity net-worth estimates are private and inconsistent. “Professor” is a job title, not a global wealth category, and the wealth of a professor can come from business or inheritance. A five-versus-five total would imply precision the data cannot support.
Follower counts are a measure of reach.
There is no audited worldwide ranking of the five “best” nurses or a fair definition of “best” across care roles. Public social-media counts change daily. Comparing a celebrity’s audience with a nurse’s absence from a ranking would confuse visibility with professional impact.
A sharper comparison starts with shared units and clear definitions: public investment, workforce capacity, access to services and outcomes over time. Even then, money and followers do not measure human worth.
Change what we celebrate.
Acknowledge the work of teachers, nurses, researchers and engineers. Ask for credible sources when someone presents a shocking number.
